THE Revenue Region of Manila led by Director Alfredo Misajon will highlight on Tuesday its annual tax-campaign program in ceremonies to be graced by television and cinema personalities, led by young singer Sarah Geronimo and actor/host Paolo Paraiso.
Authorities hope their celebrity glitter would lift morale among Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) personnel tasked with collecting a total of P830 billion this year.
Finance Secretary Margarito Teves, BIR chief Joel Tan-Torres and Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim are to launch the program at the SM Mall San Lazaro branch as the opening activity to a program culminating on April 15, the deadline of the filing of income-tax returns.
Revenue officer Ted Huelva of Revenue Region 6 in Manila said by telephone that the kick-off program aims to generate taxpayer awareness that it pays to file one’s tax return for taxable year 2009 well ahead of time.
Filing the tax return before the April 15 deadline spares taxpayers the hassle and stress associated with meeting an immovable object.
“Pay your taxes early and avoid the long queues that accompany late filers every year,” Huelva said.
According to him, the Manila revenue office generates billions of pesos for the national coffers with the Sta. Cruz area, the smallest in the district, generating at least P2 billion every year.
Tan-Torres had earlier been tasked to collect P830 billion this year to help limit the budget deficit to within P293 billion.
Tan-Torres, who inherited the job after Sixto Esquivias IV quit the post last year, might have missed his 2009 collection goal of P798.5 billion.
Unofficial estimates showed the BIR collected only P743.4 billion last year, or 7 percent less than expected.
Huelva also said the BIR’s Project Valentine, which targeted the district’s hotel and motel establishments, was off to a good start.
Establishment owners were spared the presence of BIR personnel on Valentine’s Day and were instead sent letters urging the industry to provide the agency with data on room types, number of rooms and their room rates for tax purposes.
Letters were sent to industry members on Friday and they have 10 days from receipt to provide the BIR with data validated against filings in 2008.
Establishments showing reasonable returns on specific data sought by the BIR will be spared the trouble of an agency audit, Huelva said.
