Comelec needs endorsers

Seeks help on poll automation, education

AFTER waffling on the status of celebrity endorsers during the campaign period, the Commission on Elections is now asking TV and film personalities to star in the poll body’s own voters’ education campaign.

"The Comelec is appealing to media personalities and celebrities to help in the voters’ education campaign. If you would like to help out but don’t know how, come to the Comelec and we will discuss it," said Commissioner Gregorio Larrazabal.

He said even celebrities already identified with election candidates are welcome.

"The details will still be worked out since we don’t promote a particular candidate or party. What we want is to promote is voters’ education," he said.

Larrazabal said Comelec is ironing out final details of its voters’ education campaign, which will come out soon on television, radio, and possibly cinemas.

Earlier this week, Comelec decided to leave to celebrity endorsers or their home networks the decision on whether to resign or go on leave, or remain working during the campaign season.

The Comelec said the celebrity endorsers are not required by the law to resign once the campaign period begins.

The decision was issued following the call of the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting which, citing the Fair Elections Law, for celebrity endorsers to resign or go on leave.

Larrazabal, asked how the Comelec could lure celebrity endorsers away from the "well-compensating" candidates, said: "We will appeal to their patriotism and sense of loyalty to the country kasi in the elections naman, hindi lang isang tao ang magbe-benefit e… the love for the country is more important."

Most of the presidential candidates have tapped the services of celebrity endorsers.

Among the endorsers of Sen. Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III (Liberal Party) are Vilma Santos, Kris Aquino, Boy Abunda, Sharon Cuneta, Ai-Ai delas Alas, Dingdong Dantes, Marian Rivera, Ogie Alcasid, Regine Velasquez, Anne Curtis, Erik Santos, Bea Alonzo, Gretchen Barretto, Mariel Rodriguez, Sitti, Pooh, Kim Chiu, Kris Bernal and Aljur Abrenica.

For Sen. Manny Villar (Nacionalista Party) are Dolphy, Sarah Geronimo, Michael V, Willie Revillame, Manny Pacquiao, and Richard Gutierrez.

Administration bet Gilbert Teodoro also has the Rivermaya band while religious leader Eddie Villanueva has Gloc-9, Gary Valenciano and his family.

Former President Joseph Estrada has Lorna Tolentino, Aiko Melendez and Eddie Garcia.
