Bring out the awards

31Aug06 - Manila Standard

The Aliw Awards Foundation recently announced the finalists to this year’s 19th Annual Aliw Awards. Since it was launched 30 years ago, the foundation has been the only award-giving body in the country that recognizes the talents, whether established or a newbie, on the live performance circuit, may it be at big concert halls, theaters, bars, or hotel lounges.

To be held at the Manila Hotel’s Fiesta Pavilion tonight, the Aliw Awards has listed a new and familiar crop of nominees that made headlines in the past months.

Among them are veteran actor Eula Valdez (for Best Stage Actress in a Musical Play category), who stirred buzz for her role as Zsa Zsa Zaturnah in the musical adaptation of Carlo Vergara’s comic book superheroine; Sitti Navarro, or simply known as Sitti (for Best Performer in Hotel, Musical Lounges and Bars), who burst onto the scene with her Bossa Nova music; and Pinoy Big Brother heartthrob Sam Milby (for Best New Male Artist), whose amateurish foray into recording has converted PBB fanatics into music freaks.

As in other awards night, Bamboo and Rivermaya will go head to head for Best Performance by a Group in a Concert. Multiplatinum artists Hale and Parokya ni Edgar, Cueshe, and Orange & Lemons will join in the fray and try to ruffle some feathers a bit in a contest whose outcome is likely to favor either Bamboo or Rivermaya only.

Another category to watch out for is the Best Female Emcee. The nominees are Toni Gonzaga, Bianca Gonzales, Pia Guanio, Phoemela Baranda, and Mariel Rodriguez—all familiar faces on TV. It will be the perfect opportunity for Gonzaga to redeem herself. Gonzaga has been criticized for being exaggerated and too emphatic as a host.

All in all, there are 28 categories, from which one winner will be hailed “The Entertainer of the Year.” Interestingly, Gary Valenciano bagged this top honor last year. It was his third time to be given such award. For such rare feat, Mr. Pure Energy will be elevated to the Aliw Awards’ Hall of Fame, standing shoulder to shoulder with the Concert King, Martin Nievera, also a three-time Entertainer of the Year Award recipient.

Special awards will be given to megastar Sharon Cuneta, stage director Tony Espejo, the internationally recognized Madrigal Singers, Ramon Obusan Dance Company, and Spirit of ’67 band.

Aliw Foundation president Gloria Wilma “Babes” Encarnacion said that this year’s Aliw Awards will be held for the benefit of St. Joseph Pastoral Council’s Youth Ministry and the Alagad ni Maria Religious group. Encarnacion added that the foundation plans to erect a chapel and a youth center for the beneficiaries.

To be aired on RPN-9, the Aliw Awards will be hosted by Vina Morales, Heart Evangelista, and Derek Ramsey.
