2007 is proving to be a monumental year in the charmed life of Sarah Asher Geronimo, the Philippines’ reigning pop princess. The singer, actress and model recently finished high school under a home-study program, and is currently studying her options for college. She admits, however, that her hectic schedule as a performer limits her college options: she is just too busy to attend a regular school.
“My dream has always been to enter the University of Santo Tomas’s Conservatory of Music,” Sarah revealed. “I passed the entrance exam for the Conservatory of Music,” she continued, “but we decided to defer enrolment because we feared I might not be able to cope with the demands of being a regular college student.”
Sarah’s mother, Divina, voiced concerns that her daughter’s career might not allow her to concentrate enough on her studies. “We don’t want her grades to suffer because of her showbiz commitments,” Divina said, “so we’re being very careful about how to proceed in college.”
“If only the authorities at the Conservatory of Music will credit my musical achievements,” mused Sarah, “that would be great!”
And why not? This wisp of a girl with the killer pipes has consistently nabbed almost all the accolades and awards available for outstanding achievement in singing. Sarah has been lauded everything from Female Recording Star of 2006 to Outstanding Female Role Youth Model of 2004 to being hailed as one of the People of the Year by Asia Magazine.
But mother and daughter are clearly not without alternative plans. Divina explained, “aside from UST, Sarah also has the option of going to the AMA Education System where she has a scholarship. We are also thinking of going to the University of the Philippines’ Open University, which offers distance education for working people.”
While Sarah is busy weighing her options for college, work does not cease: This coming July, when she turns 18, she will embark on a daring new path by headlining a major concert dubbed “In Motion,” which will be followed by a U.S. concert tour in August and September. A Guam stop is in the works.
“‘In Motion’ will be held on July 14 at the Araneta Coliseum,” Sarah announced, “and my guests will be Jericho Rosales, Mark Bautista, Gary Valenciano, John Prats, Sam Milby, Louie Ocampo, and Ai-Ai De Las Alas.”
Sarah is also hard at work recording what will be her fourth solo album under Viva Records. This follows in the heels of highly successful solo efforts which started with Popstar: A Dream Come True (2003), released when she was only 14 and newly crowned winner of the “Star For A Night” singing contest hosted by Regine Velasquez.
Aside from landing a recording contract with Viva, the young singing sensation won a million pesos and became an instant celebrity. Her debut album sold 180,000 copies. Sweet Sixteen, released in 2004 sold 60,000; Becoming (2006), 30,000.
In between her solo studio albums, Sarah has contributed to eight other compilation albums under Viva Records, all of which were consistent best-sellers.
Sarah is more than a phenomenal voice. She has parlayed her singing career into stardom in the movies and television as well as multiple product endorsements. Last year, she shone as the lead star in ABS-CBN’s top primetime soap opera, “Bituing Walang Ningning,” a remake of the 1985 movie classic in which she played Dorina, the role originally essayed by Sharon Cuneta.
Amidst all the preparations for her concert and album release, Sarah has found the time to shoot another soap. “The mini-series, ‘Pangarap Na Bituin’ will be shown on ABS-CBN within the year,” Sarah said. “It will also feature Jericho Rosales, Maja Salvador and Rica Peralejo.”
And all these for a lady who has yet to turn 18! Indeed, things can only get better for Sarah.
