Distance learning at UP
My friend Gigi Alfonso is the new chancellor of the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU). Gigi’s investiture was held during the graduation rites of UPOU students held in UP Diliman campus. UP has been at the forefront of distance learning.
The UPOU which has been in existence since 1995 has its main campus located in Los Baños, Laguna but there are several learning centers where students can enroll or visit. “We are into cyber learning,” Gigi enthuses. “Student can enroll on-line. They can also interact with other UPOU students in cyberspace.” Sharon Cuneta is one of the first local celebrities to enroll at the university. “She is doing very well.”
Other recruits to cyber education are Jackie Lou Blanco and Sarah Geronimo. Gigi before her appointment as chancellor was an active UP Diliman professor. She teaches film at the UP Film School and is a member of the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino. An avid moviegoer, Gigi says that local movies are dwarfed by Hollywood mega movies. “Pero maraming magagaling na Filipino directors,” she declares
