a few things for those who want to try these tutorials
but either don't have photoshop,
or have a different program such as PSP (paintshop pro)

1. GIMP is a similar program to photoshop
and it's free
only thing is it is probably not as good as photoshop or psp.
http://www.gimp.org/

2. considering i'm not using selective color
these tutorials should be translatable
meaning you can use them in other photo editing programs
including GIMP and PSP.

AVATAR 3
I'm pretty sure it's the third one. :)

This was the original icon I made a long time ago.
Posted Image

But I decided to make it better, and share it w/ all of you, lol.

We are going to go from

this Posted Image to this Posted Image

1. Take your picture and drag it on to a new document of 100x100.
I used this picture from Sarah's 18th on ASAP.

Posted Image

I resized it and titled it a bit to get this.

Posted Image

Crop your image.
The way that I do this is by selecting the entire image (ctrl + A)
And then Image>Crop
This is so that the rest of the picture thatís not seen, isnít there anymore.

2. Again we make it lighter using the dodge tool twice. (See previous tutorials if you donít know what the dodge tool is).

Posted Image

3. Duplicate the layer and set its blending mode to overlay.

Posted Image

4. Make a new layer.
Select the gradient tool (G) [<<<if you see any letter in brackets like that, it means that all you have to do is press that letter and it selects that tool :)]
At the top you'll see all these options choose Radial Gradient

Now picking your colors,
The foreground should be a darker color than the background.
I chose #ed145a for my foreground color
And #fff200 for my background color.

Now start the pointer at the part you want emphasized in your icon.
For this one I want Sarah's head/upper body to be emphasized.
So I start there and drag the pointer diagonally [i]almost[/] to the bottom of the icon.

You get this
Posted Image

Now set the blending mode to lighten, opacity 90%

5. Duplicate the first layer and bring it to the top of all the layers.
Set that layer to softlight.

Posted Image

Flatten the Image. Layer> Flatten Image

6. Duplicate the layer
Select the Marquee tool (M)
Make sure itís the Rectangular Marquee tool.
Make a thin rectangular marquee around part of your icon.

Posted Image

Inverse the selection (ctrl+shift+I)
And press delete.
This is what your layers panel should look like.

Posted Image

Deselect (ctrl+d)

7. Using the move tool (v)
Move the image to the right end of the icon.
Put a drop down shadow
Angle: 0
Opacity: 50

Posted Image

8. Add text.
I simply put Sarah, made it horizontal w/ the move tool.
Added a stroke of 3 px using a color from the icon itself.
Then I put the Text layer underneath the second layer.
And youíre done!

Canít wait to see what you guys make!! :D
