Christian Bautista reveals why he made ‘the big move’ from Warner Music to Universal Records
I have fallen in love
With the same woman three times
In a day spanning nineteen years
Of tearful joys and joyful tears
I loved her first when she was young
Enchanting and vibrant, eternally new
She was brilliant, fragrant
And cool as the morning dew
I fell in love with her the second time
When first she bore her child and mine
She’s always by my side
The source of my strength
Helping to turn the tide
But there were candles to burn
The world was my concern
While our home was her domain
And the people were mine
While the children were hers to maintain
So it was in those eighteen years and a day
Till I was detained, forced in prison to stay
Suddenly she’s our sole support
Source of comfort, our wellspring of hope
On her shoulders fell the burden of life
I fell in love again with the same woman the third time
Looming from the battle her courage will never fade
Amidst the hardships she has remained
Undaunted and unafraid
She is calm and composed
She is God’s lovely maid
That poem, titled I Have Fallen In Love (With The Same Woman Three Times), was written by Benigno Aquino Jr. for Cory Aquino at Fort Bonifacio on Oct. 11, 1973 for their 19th wedding anniversary and set to music by Jose Mari Chan who recorded it in 1989.
Today on the ABS-CBN noontime show A.S.A.P. ‘09, Christian Bautista will sing that song which he’s dedicating to former Pres. Cory Aquino who lost her brave battle with colon cancer at 3:18 yesterday morning at the Makati Med where she was confined for more than a month.
It’s also one of the 20 songs in Christian’s latest album, untitled just yet and to be released early next month, his first for Universal Records, the new home to which he made “the big move” from Warner Music with which he had been under contract since 2004 (his contract has recently expired) and which released his first four albums.
The 19 others are all Jose Mari Chan classics, including Tell Me Your Name, Beautiful Girl, Please Be Careful With My Heart (a duet with Sarah Geronimo), My Girl My Woman My Friend (with Regine Velasquez), Here And Now (with Lani Misalucha), A Heart’s Journey (with Jose Mari Chan), Constant Change, Refrain, Can’t We Start Over Again, I Remember The Girl, Stay My Love, Be Gentle, So I’ll Go, Can We Just Stop And Talk Awhile, Deep In My Heart, Afterglow, Afraid For Love To Fade, A Love To Last A Lifetime and Christmas Past.Part of that “big move” was the reinvention of Christian.
So why the “reinvention”?
”Well, it’s about time that I changed a bit my ‘good boy’ image. It involves not only my looks, which is more mature, but also my style of singing which is now more intimate, more mellow and more mapuso. To us Filipinos kasi, nagiging magaling agad ang singer kapag mahusay bumirit when he reaches the high notes. What I want to prove now is that even if I don’t scream at you, I want to let you feel the heart of my song.”
Your “big move” from Warner to Universal came suddenly. Any hard feelings between Warner and you?
“You know, I will always be grateful to Warner for building me up and for taking care of me, even if when I started I finished only fourth (to Erik Santos) in the Star In A Million contest. Kahit natalo ako they still believed in me and made me what I am now. But there comes a time in your career when you want to reinvent yourself, so when we were offered by Universal this kind of album, na-challenge ako. It was an offer I could not refuse.”
It’s some kind of your tribute to Jose Mari Chan.
“I have been a big fan of Jose Mari Chan since I was a kid. It’s a big, big honor for me to sing his songs, all of them I know by heart. I can see similarities, kahit konti lang naman, between Jose Mari and me, especially sa style ng pagkanta which is very mellow. Like him, I love love songs. His songs have crossed-over to Asian countries and I hope my new album will do the same. We met the other day for lunch and the first thing I told him was, ‘Sir, I need to hug you.’ For him to allow me to sing his songs is, as I’ve said, a great honor. He told me that what I’m doing is sharing his songs to the new generation and he’s glad daw that I am the one doing it.”
What’s your favorite Jose Mari Chan song?
“Beautiful Girl. It’s so romantic, ang sarap kantahin sa isang babae...you know, that longing for love that’s right there in front of you na ayaw mong pakawalan. When I was in Jakarta for a concert, I discovered that the people there know that song very well.”
Physically, how did you prepare for this “reinvention”?
“I’ve been working out with a trainer at Gold’s Gym since last February, only for one hour each time because I am an ectomorph.”
An ectomorph? What’s that?
“Well, if you check out the Webster Dictionary, it says there that it’s a condition characterized by a lean, slender body build with slight muscular development. If I work out for more than one hour, mahihirapan na ako mag-gain weight even if I eat a lot, not to mention the fact na mabilis ang metabolism ko. I burn everything I eat; I just sweat and sweat and sweat. The opposite of ectomorph is endomorph. ‘Yon naman, mabilis lumaki pero mahirap magpapayat.”
Is it true that you are a polio survivor?
“Not naman polio. I used to wear braces kasi medyo pike ako noon. I had some problems with my bones kaya hanggang ngayon hirap pa rin ako sumayaw. One of my legs used to be shorter than the other and it was getting in the way of my dancing. When I was a kid, I was bow-legged, palagi akong nadadapa, so I had to wear braces. Thank God it had been corrected na.” (Christian stands 5’11" and wears medium-sized shirt and size-10 shoes.)
Any other part of your body that needs improvement?
“I have to work on my legs some more and my upper body, especially my arms, para mas malaki tingnan sa TV. I have to lift weights and do push-ups and sit-ups for that. Ayoko naman ng masyadong malaking body because it’s not nice for a balladeer to look like a hunk. Hindi bagay. Hunk ka pagkatapos kumakanta ka ng love songs.”
And what part naman is most vulnerable?
“My tummy. Singers usually suffer from acid reflux and it can affect your voice. Kaya I don’t go to sleep kaagad; I have to digest what I eat for two hours no matter how small the meal. Otherwise, the acid will go up your tummy and burn your throat.”
Is clearing the throat really bad for singers, or for everybody for that matter?
“Yes, that’s true. Kaya what I do is swallow; lumulunok na lang ako.”
How else do you protect your voice?
“I don’t drink cold water, only warm water. I don’t smoke, I drink wine only for socials.”
What part of your body is your favorite?
“My eyes. They say that they are the windows to your soul, di ba?
If you want people to feel your song more, you have to look at them straight in the eye. I used to be so shy that I could never look at someone’s eyes. But I have corrected that. Now I look at everybody in the audience straight in the eye at agad-agad mayroong connection.”
What part naman of a girl’s body do you first look at?
“The face and then the legs...and the butt!”
What’s it about a girl that turns you off?
“‘Yung mga dishonest, ‘yung hindi mo alam kung totoo ba ang sinasabi sa’yo o kung pina-plastic ka lang.”
Is there any special diet for ectomorphic people like you?
“Well, basically I just eat a lot. Nothing special. I eat full meals every two hours, kasi nga mabilis ang metabolism ko. I see to it that I take two eggs, only the whites, with every meal. For breakfast, I usually take only oatmeal if I’m in a hurry. If not, I cook corned beef and tuna and make them into a sandwich. Sometimes, I mix pork and beans with Vienna sausage. For lunch, I’m always out so I eat anything, mostly protein like steak.”
What vitamins do you take?
“Nitro Tech which I take before working out. I also take Mega-Men from GNC and Berocca for stress.”
How much water do you take per day?
“A lot because, as I said, I sweat a lot, even during interviews. I like apple juice. Soda? Not much. Instead of coffee, I take Chamomile Tea.”
You have broken up with Rachelle Ann Go who is now the girlfriend of Gabriel Valenciano. How’s your love life?
“I’m very single, very ready.”
Does it follow that if you don’t have a love life you also don’t have a sex life?
“With me? It does, usually. I believe in sex after marriage.”
With your busy schedule, do you have a nightlife?
“Hardly. Kasi nga I have to work out. I have to take care of this body. I need to get enough sleep kasi no matter how much you work out, walang manyayari sa’yo if you don’t sleep. Lack of sleep also affects your voice.”
So how much sleep do you get per night?
“I try to get as much as six to seven hours.”
What’s the last thing that you do before you go to sleep?
And the first thing that you do when you wake up?
Do you snore?
“No, I don’t...according to my parents.”
Do you talk in your sleep?
“No, I don’t...according to my parents.”
Do you sleepwalk?
“Luckily, I don’t. Di ba dangerous ‘yon?”
How many pillows do you sleep with?
“Three. The long one I put under my head, one I put on my side and the other one yakap-yakap ko.”
Favorite sleep wear?
“Boxers and shorts.”
Never in the nude?
“Never. Hmmmmm. I tried it once at nailang ako.”
How do you cope with stress?
“I have a massage at least once every two weeks. I block off my days and take a vacation. Or I just stay home and play with my dogs while listening to music.”
“Barcelona. It’s very romantic. Ang ganda-ganda! I was there during a promo for TFC (The Filipino Channel).”
Name three men who you think have nice bodies.
“Hugh Jackman. Ryan Reynolds. Will Devaughn.”
And three women...
“Priscilla Meirelles. Paula Taylor. Angel Locsin.”
Using only body language, how would you make a girl know that you admire her?
“I stare at her...intensely!”
