Sarah Geronimo is a Pinoy showbiz enigma. Eight years, 12 albums, six movies and countless awards in a saucy industry and she has yet to be involved in controversy, hasn’t had an intimate relationship…or even an onscreen kiss. It’s not just the Mona Lisa smile that she gives when asked about her love life. No one can figure out how she can stay a billboard and blockbuster chart-topper and 24/7-in-the-spotlight star, all the while wrapped up in the big red bow of a wholesome image.

We unravel the Sarah G mystery as she lets her hair down and shares with us her story and the secrets behind her success; along with the expert help she has had along the way. Showcasing designs by Filipinodesigners, Sarah lets us into her world, where dreams have a funny way of coming true—when you take them seriously.

STRAIGHT A

Singing, acting, hosting, dancing, starring in concerts and in commercials—it’s no easy business. Sarah is a showbiz wunderkind, a Straight A student who stays on top of it all. How does she do it? With an F, a D+ and a C: Focus, Discipline/Determination and a Constant drive to improve. She has her priorities straight: (home) school, work and family/friends—not in order, but certainly in balance.

“Minsan, ’pag may biglang lakad, siyempre hindi mo ’yun puwedeng ipagpalit sa trabaho mo (Sometimes, when there are sudden invitations to go out, of course, you can’t choose those over work),” says Sarah. “Pero [sa ibang bagay], priority mo pa rin ’yung pamilya mo at kaibigan (But in other things, of course, your priority is still your family and friends),” Sarah imparts.

Though she misses having teachers and classmates, Sarah works hard on her self-study program. As to how she got into so many “extra-curricular activities” in the first place, she says that she has ASAP to thank for. She relays, “Napaka-blessed ako to be part of ASAP. It’s our training ground. Dito nakita ng mga tao na may potential ako sa pagsayaw. At kulang-kulang pa nga ang performances ko! Lalo kung ikukumpara kila Beyoncé at Usher na may constant dance lessons. That’s something I want to pursue, para consistent (I’m so blessed to be part of ASAP. It’s ourtraining ground. It’s here that people spotted my potential in dancing. Actually my performances can still use some improvement! Especially when compared to artists like Beyoncé and Usher who have constant dance lessons. That’s something I want to pursue in order to be consistent[ly good]).”

DAMAGE CONTROL

The spotlight can get intensely hot. How does Sarah stay cool in an industry of intrigue? She relays, “Siyempre, unang-una sa lahat, dapat maging careful ka with your actions and ’yung mga sinasabi mo (First, of course, you have to be careful with your actions and with what you say). Medyo may problema nga ako dyan kasi may pagka-straightforward talaga ako minsan. Sinasabi ko kung ano ’yung nararamdaman ko (I actually have a bit of a problem with that as well because sometimes I’m just really straightforward [with my answers]. I just say what I feel).”

While the press has tried (in vain) to link her romantically to some of her leading men and co artists, Sarah points to a different issue as the “worst intrigue” that she has come across in her career: “When they said that my mom was overprotective, a stage mother. Nakakainis talaga ’yung term na ’yun. Napakasuwerte kong nandiyan si Mommy. Lalo tuwing nalilito ako kung saan ako pupunta. Ang laking tulong ng guidance niya. Kaya rin wala akong controversy. Nadidisiplina niya ako (“Stage mother” is a really offending term. I’m so lucky to have my mom with me, especially when I’m confused in my career path. Her guidance is of so much help. This is also why I don’t get involved in controversy. She disciplines me).”

As to why she remains single, Sarah explains, “College studies are my priority. Ang hirap na ngang pagsabayin ang aral sa trabaho. Isisingit pa ang pakikipag- boyfriend! Pero wala namang masama siguro na meron kang inspirasyon. Haha! (It’s already so hard to do my studies and my work at the same time. I have no room for a boyfriend! But I suppose there’s nothing wrong with getting some inspiration).” If this isn’t enough wisdom for her age, even her type of guy reflects maturity: “Iyong respectful sa pamilya ko (to my family) and loves me for who I really am. Ang hirap maghanap ng faithful at guwapo nowadays. Siguro cute na lang at mamahalin akong tapat (It’s so hard to find someone faithful and handsome nowadays. Maybe I’ll have someone cute instead, who truly loves me).”
