Pop Phenomenon Sarah Geronimo – Singer
By Bianca R. Salonga
If you are considered a phenomenon, likened by fans and industry watchers to “Superstar” Nora Aunor, the entertainment gods must adore you. Sixteen-year old Sarah Geronimo’s star-making rendition of Celine Dion’s “To Love You More” (her winning song during Viva’s Star for a Night) has not only endeared her a million pesos, it has also made her one of the biggest names in entertainment. After her victory, the young belter was immediately signed to a recording contract.
The talent of Sarah appeals to all - young, not so young, hip and traditional. Everyone. Her songs consistently top the charts and all her concerts are hits. With acting added to her repertoire (the TV series Sarah the Teen Princess, plus a role in Lastikman, this year’s entry to the Metro Manila Film Festival), and constant touring (recently in the US), Sarah is busy showing the world just what Filipino talent is all about. “It hardly felt like work when we were on tour. Our audiences enjoyed it, so I enjoyed it, too,” she recalls.
In September, Sarah earned an Awit Award for Best Performance by a New Female Artist. The Aliw Awards also honored her as Most Promising Female Singer. A new album is in the works , called – what else? - Sweet 16 will surely strengthen her sweetheart status. But Sarah has also learned to slow down a bit. “I’m taking lessons on proper singing technique now. I’ve really learned to become more careful about my voice,” she says. After all, at 16, that tender voice is a precious commodity.
