Kundiman queen Sylvia La Torre dazzles in Laro
By IBARRA C. MATEO
11/30/2010 | 04:08 PM

With the three exacting songs she performed Saturday evening at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, legendary soprano Sylvia La Torre showed compellingly on the country’s premier stage that watching her is still a dazzling theatrical experience even in the age of YouTube and 3D cinema.

Still recovering from a recent major operation, the 77-year old La Torre sang her personal favorites “Sa Kabukiran" (1939, by Manuel Velez), “Waray Waray" (1953, by Juan Silos), and “Kalesa" (circa 1950s, by A. Del Rosario) in the concert “Laro: Child’s Play at the CCP."

The audience warmly embraced her performance, rumbling with applause when the US-based soprano said, “I recall many happy memories when I sing songs like Kalesa."

Elegant and stunning in a beaded gown executed by Aureo Alonzo in varying hues of pink, the country’s undisputed queen of kundiman (traditional love songs) regaled the audience with her spiels, gushing about her husband Dr. Celso Perez de Tagle, “We are still sweetah even after being married for 56 years already."

Pop singer Sarah Geronimo performed the children’s ditties “Sitsiritsit" and “Leron, Leron Sinta" along with the Bicol favorite “Sarung Banggi" at the concert, which sought to introduce the younger audience to traditional Filipino music.

The US-based baritone Andrew Fernando, who had the same voice teacher as La Torre, also shared the CCP Main Theater stage with his renditions of the Visayan classic “Dandansoy" and the playful “Tong, Tong, Tong, Tong" and “Pen, Pen de sarapen."

The 62-member Philippine Youth Symphonic Band, aged 2 to 22, under the baton of Maestro Romeo San Jose provided musical back-up to La Torre, Fernando, and Geronimo. La Torre praised the band members, saying they were “very good" because they were able to provide musical accompaniment even though “my songs were difficult songs."

For young musicians

The last time La Torre came to the Philippines was in 2006, when she held a concert produced by art patron Danny Dolor.

In a backstage interview after the Laro concert, La Torre said: “Oh my God, I am so happy and excited. I have not performed in a long while."

She agreed to the invitation of Irene Marcos-Araneta, chairman of the board of the Young Musicians’ Development Organization, to perform in “Laro" because she wanted to help raise funds for the education of young musicians.

“I am willing to return to the Philippines to perform to benefit good causes. I really wanted to help Irene Marcos-Araneta in this fund-raising concert," she told GMANews.TV.

“My husband said that I am brave and courageous to agree to perform barely two months after a major surgery," she said. To prepare for the concert, she had to do her vocalization in a gradual manner. She takes care of her voice by not drinking cold drinks, by going to bed early, and by not talking very much.

In a post-concert interview with the media at the CCP Main Theater Lobby, La Torre was asked what will make her stay longer in the Philippines. Her reply: “Alam mo ayaw akong payagan ng mga bata dahil pag nandito daw ako, I will appear on TV, I will have offers. Baka hindi ako makatiis dahil iyon ang hinahanap ko."

La Torre added that she was “deeply heartened" by the loud applause from the audience. “I could not believe that until now they really love me so much. Even at the airport, Filipinos welcomed me," she enthused.

She is looking forward to a reunion with former colleagues in the entertainment industry such as Perla Bautista, Delia Razon, Rosa Rosal, and German Moreno. “I miss my friends and former work colleagues based in the Philippines," she added.

La Torre says her message to young Filipinos would be the same thing she tells her eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren: “They have to study hard, work hard, and persevere. If you are a musician, you have to bear the hardships of long hours of practice."

She says she teaches her grandchildren kundiman classics such as “Sa Kabukiran" and “Bituing Marikit," adding: “It is important for young Filipinos to know these songs. They are part of our culture." – YA, GMANews.TV

I was supposed to report for work yesterday (Nov. 27) but when I learned that Sarah would be guesting in "Laro! Child''s Play Concert at the CCP," well, I moved heaven and earth to be able to skip work and watch the concert. The last time i saw Sarah was in her "Record Breaker Cavite" concert and siguro miss ko na siya so I really did everything I could to be able to see her again. We arrived at the CCP area 30 minutes before 6 pm. Kuya Bes brought his camera and was telling me how excited he was to take pictures but upon entering the venue we were dismayed when the guard said "Bawal ang camera." Pero naman, kung love mo si Sarah hahayaan mo ba na hindi ma-document ang kahit na anong event na andoon siya at present ka? To cut a long story short, naipuslit ni Kuya Bes ang point-and-shoot camera niya... and the rest is history. harhar.

Sarah looked so fresh and happy and her voice was ohlala. The first time she appeared on stage talagang woooow! if i remember right (very bad ang memory ko, sorry) she sang "Sitsiritsit, Alibangbang" and "Leron, Leron Sinta." binigyan nya ng sexy twist ang mga songs na 'to. kasi naman, may giling effect siya (na wholesome ha! and for me, only a sarah geronimo can pull off something like that) at yung facial expression habang kumakanta, ang galing! I don't know if I missed any song sa first appearance niya, e, basta yun ang natatandaan ko. tapos after her first set of songs when she was on her way to the backstage when she heard the famous "We love you, Sarah!" (alam niyo na kung sino kayo guys  ) tumingin siya kung saan nanggaling yung sigaw then like a child, dumila siya sandali while walking papunta sa likod... alam niyo, yung parang batang na-surprise? hehe. cute reaction. ah nagbiro din siya nung narinig uli niya yung battle cry (sa second appearance niya), sabi niya, "Nagbitbit po ako ng mga fans" (sabay bungisngis) at benta yun sa audience. hehe. :p

Then merong 15-minute break ata yun. we were planning to go out na, thinking that Sarah won't be coming back but since I also like sylvia la torre (who is also an RP music icon), we opted to finish the concert. buti na lang! kasi Sarah still came out for another performance. this time she sang "Sarong Banggi" (tama ba spelling?) but take note! she sang it in Bicolano (again, correct me if i'm wrong kasi sorry naman pero alam ko bicolano ang song na ito) and then nag-shift siya sa Tagalog version, ang galing! after her song she introduced the kids na part din nung Philippine Youth Symphonic Band (the beneficiary of the concert) at walang buckle ang lola ha. i didn't even see her glance at the monitor kasi medyo mahaba ang litanya niya. the kids used bottles in lieu of musical instruments (ang husay!) and played "Saranggola ni Pepe" for the audience. one of my fave parts ito ng concert.

Then it was sylvia la torre's time to perform for the audience at after ng last song niya, nagulat ako when Sarah appeared again, saying "He tita..." lambing ng boses! sabi ni sylvia sa kanya, "Naku, ang ganda-ganda ng batang ito..." Sarah in turn was speechless. Smile lang siya. Then nag-greet sila ng Merry Christmas and sang "Kumukutikutitap," this time the host, Cherie Gil, and the other guest, baritone Andrew Fernando, joined them. I don't know if this song was a last-minute addition to the concert because they all kept looking at the monitor and apparently di nila memoryado yung kanta pero ok pa rin ang kinalabasan. yung blending ng voice and yung galaw nila sa stage ang saya tingnan. mga pro talaga! sabi ni Kuya Bes, "Tin, talagang napatunayan ko na hindi sapawera si Sarah." aba'y proven naman yan! mga hunghang lang ang nagsasabi na sapawera siya o nagha-hallucinate lang na nananapaw siya. <))

To leah and SJ na naka-text ko, too bad guys that we weren't able to see each other (ay, si Leah pala nag-wave wave kami! ) Sabi ko nga, there will always be a next time. mata-target din natin yan!

Sigh. :p :yey:
