Ghost stalks 'Spirit of the Glass' players
Canary Films and director Jose Javier Reyes have another winner: Spirit of the Glass. Preem-goers on Dec. 19 at The Podium were unabashedly screaming every time horror appeared onscreen, including the false ones! By magnifying the best elements of last year's Metro Manila Film Festival Philippine top performer, Malikmata, that includes superb acting, eerie photography, hair-raising soundtrack and impressive direction, direk Joey has been able to increase the terror several folds. If you want a terrific scare this Christmas, Buzzstation highly recommends Spirit of the Glass.
A haunting story about unfulfilled love, the Ouija Board players (among them Rica Peralejo, Dingdong Santos, Paolo Contis, Alessandra de Rossi, Ciara Sotto and Drew Arellano) unleash the ghost of a man as brilliantly played by Marvin Agustin one good Friday in the ancestral house of Rica's family. He was buried alive by the male relatives of a woman (Rica) whom he got pregnant. Marvin plays a persistent ghost, stalking the young people who freed him to help him seek justice from his killers without stop. At first denying the horror that they got themselves in, they are forced to confront the ghost when they realized there no way out of the terror but to do this.
As in Malikmata, the greatest strength of Spirit in the Glass is the technical breakthrough. In sync with the tone and tune of the storytelling are the life-like details with tick-tock precision. Computer-generated scenes lend incredible scenes credulity. Music that mixes opera with techno in Dolby surround system makes the eerie more so. All this intensifies the viewing experience, making it appear that the viewer is in the same place where the characters are panicking. It is most likely that this Canary Film movie will runaway with most of the technical awards in this year's filmfest.
Be ready for the jolt of the surprise ending. You would not want to sleep in an ancestral house again!
