MANILA, Philippines -- Bringning down Sarah: Is there a concerted effort to bring down Sarah Geronimo from among the ranks of her own co-workers at ABS-CBN?
Negative stories about the singer-actress, the leader in her league, have been leaking to the media with such regularity that some people can’t help but wonder if this is all part of a grand design to demolish the popular young actress.
First, there were talks of Sarah’s unprofessionalism while making her last movie under Star Cinema, “Catch Me…I’m In Love.”
That first round of “unprofessional” talk was followed by more rumors claiming that Sarah had been refusing to do production numbers on “ASAP” with Angeline Quinto, winner of the network’s most recent talent show, “Star Power.”
While there may be some basis to the latter, both Sarah and Angeline have downplayed the report. Those sympathetic to Sarah claim that the box office champion resented Angeline’s tendency to hog their numbers together by consistently going over the top (birit).
A production insider says that since these incidents happened, Sarah had refused to do any more joint numbers with the up and coming star. Other sources theorize that since the network has big plans for its homegrown singer-and-soon-to-be-actress, it is doing all it can to drag Sarah into the fray, thus speeding up Angeline’s popularity.
Take note, one source says, that Sarah isn’t an exclusive ABS-CBN talent. She is a contract star of Viva, and is therefore, really an outsider. Sarah has only one show running on channel 2.
Angeline in center: Amid claims that she has been using Sarah to widen her popularity, Angeline Quinto maintains a good sense of humor.
She’s rather careful in her speech where Sarah is concerned, but breaks out into characteristic humorous prattle when talk shifts to her likes (Sam Milby and Coco Martin).
Of Coco, she says, the two of them have basic similarities. “I see myself in him. Mahiyain at guwapo. Parang ako, mahiyan at maganda.”
Of Sam Milby, recently photographed at his best in “Forever and a Day:” “It will be hard to be his girlfriend as he always speaks in Engish. “Pagod na ako, pagod pa ako sa kanya.”
Angeline regaled the press with her street-smart asides and humor-filled takes on acts inherent to showbiz when ABS-CBN hosted a lunch to promote her forthcoming first major show, “Angeline Quinto: Patuloy Ang Pangarap,” slated at the Skydome in SM North EDSA on July 15.
As you read this, the still-surprised high school dropout is currently on a US concert tour with her mentor, Sharon Cuneta. Angeline remains unbelieving of her success, recalling the days when she would lose out to another hopeful in the person of Sarah Geronimo in previous singing contests, and how her relatives, including her own father and brother, berated her for not being good enough as a singer.
ABS-CBN has big plans for Angeline, whose casual, easy-going ways are topped by a humor-filled demeanor. In many ways, she is just like Sarah, who cracks up at the tiniest opportunity.
Showbiz will always have room for newcomers like Angeline Quinto, who’s not only talented but also quite interesting.
