You, too, must have been wondering if Sarah Geronimo ever sleeps, what with her airtight schedule of making movies, taping for soaps, recording albums, doing personal appearances here and abroad, and a hundred other activities that could knock down a girl of lesser stuff.
“It’s a matter of time management,” said Sarah who is currently promoting The Sarah G. Phone by MyPhone, the first ever Music Album Phone (MAP) which contains the following tracks: Laging Kay Ganda (produced by MyPhone), Panalangin, Harana, Sana, Kay Ganda ng Ating Musika, Masdan Mo ang Kapaligiran, Umagang Kay Ganda and Laging Kay Ganda (acoustic version). “Yes, I sleep well and I eat well. And, thank God, I’m healthy naman.”
How do you feel about coming out with an album exclusively on MyPhone device?
“I’m thrilled, kasi nga it’s a first. I’m happy and honored that I am the first artist to do it. And I’m proud that the product I’m endorsing, ito ngang MyPhone, ay gawang-Pinoy.”
Piracy is still a big problem in the entertainment industry, so hopefully the MyPhone device and can help minimize if not eradicate it. You see, MyPhone is so equipped that the songs in it cannot be pirated. (Eat your hearts out, Pirates!). The pre-installed tracks are protected by the MAP technology, meaning the music files cannot be distributed and will solely be available in the Sarah G. phone.
With Sarah as endorser and the first-ever artist to be so featured, sales of MyPhone has reportedly shot up, exceeding expectations.
“Talaga po? Thank you.”
Does that mean another partnership with MyPhone soon?
“Sana nga…sana soon!”
Incidentally, Sarah will have a Valentine concert with Concert King Martin Nievera at the Araneta Coliseum on Feb. 12 next year, titled What Love Is, produced by Viva Concerts with Louie Ocampo as musical director and Rowell Santiago as director. (Tickets are priced at P4,000 for Patron A, P3,500 for Patron B, P3,500 for Lower Box, P1,500 for Upper Box A, P1,000 for Upper Box B and P400 for General Admission., Call Ticketnet at 911-5555 or Viva Concerts at 687-7236.)
Teased that she’s now the New Concert Queen, Sarah blushed as she begged off.
“Hindi naman po. There’s only one Concert Queen.”
Many people agree that it’s Ai-Ai delas Alas who’s the current title-holder but the fans of Pops Fernandez, Martin’s ”ex,” claimed that their idol is still “it.” Asked about it in a TV show, Pops said good-humoredly, “Marami pa namang available title d’yan, eh.”
Said Sarah, “Hindi ko iniisip ang title-title. What I focus on is doing my work well.”
At 22 (turning 23 on July 25 next year), Sarah stands 5’4”, weighs 112 lbs., and wears small/medium-size shirts and size-7 shoes.
How do you find time for your many activities (movies, TV shows, recording, concerts both here and abroad, etc.)?
“Mas maluwag ang schedule ko ngayon. I was just finished with my Idol (the ABS-CBN teleserye), so all I’m doing are out-of-town and out-of-the-country shows. This year, I did only one movie, Hating Kapatid (with Judy Ann Santos), and I concentrated more on singing and the preparation for my Valentine concert with Martin.”
With your tight schedule, how much sleep do you get per night?
I usually go to sleep at 2 a.m. and, if I don’t have work the next day, I wake up late. Nakaka-10 hours naman ako.”
Are you a pillow person?
“I love hugging a pillow. I have only two. The other one ‘yung sa ilalim ng head ko.”
Do you sleep alone in your room?
“No. I sleep with my sister.”
How do you want the aircon to be, full blast or quiet cool lang?
“’Yung medyo mahina lang. Ginawin kasi ako, eh.”
Do you snore?
“Only when I’m tired.”
Do you talk in your sleep?
“Sabi nila minsan daw po!”
Do you sleepwalk?
“No, I don’t.”
What’s the last thing that you do before you go to sleep?
What do you usually pray for?
“The safety of my family. I also surrender to Him my problems and my concerns.”
First thing that you do when you wake up?
“I pray again.”
With your irregular schedule, can you manage to take three square meals a day?
What’s usually for breakfast?
“Sometimes, especially when I wake up late, nagiging brunch na siya. I’m a rice-eater so gusto ko kanin na kaagad sa breakfast --- kanin with pagkaing-Pinoy like adobo, sinigang o kaya Fried Chicken.”
What’s for lunch?
“Kanin uli. I love what my mom cooks, especially her kare-kare. My dad is fond of cooking, too. Mahilig siya magluto ng tapa. Gusto ko rin ‘yon. I’m not choosy with food. Lahat kinakain ko.”
Good thing you don’t get fat.
“Mabilis ang metabolism ko, eh.”
For dinner, light or heavy, or none at all?
(Laughs) “Kanin din po at saka ulam.”
Do you take snacks between meals?
“Yes, whatever is there.”
What food do you always crave for?
What vitamins do you take?
“Vitamin C and vitamin E.”
How much water do you take per day?
“A lot. Malakas ako sa tubig. I have to be hydrated all the time. Kailangan ng katawan ko kasi palagi akong on the move, eh.”
Sarah co-stars with Martin Nievera in the Valentine convert What Love Is set for Feb. 12 next year at the Araneta Coliseum.
Coffee or tea?
“Mahilig ako sa Coke but since bawal nga po, binabawasan ko.”
Do you have a sweet tooth?
“Ay, mahilig po ako sa sweets. I love chocolates. My favorite is Linds chocolates.”
Do you have time to work out?
“Naku, that’s my goal --- to do regular workouts. But since I can’t go to the gym, I exercise na lang at home while watching workout videos.”
What part of your body do you think needs improvement?
What part is most vulnerable?
“My neck. It aches when I fail to do stretching exercise.”
You are a belter. How do you take care of your voice? Veteran singers say that the singing should come from the diaphragm and not from the throat, otherwise you could hurt your nodules.
“I do vocal exercises before singing. I make sure na ‘yung kinakanta ko ay within my vocal range. Or else, mada-damage ang vocal cords mo.”
What part of your body naman is your favorite?
(Laughs and laughs) “Ha? Mayroon ba? Actually, wala…wala!”
And what part of a guy’s body do you notice first?
“His eyes.
What else turns you on?
“He should be respectful.”
And what turns you off?
How do you relax, cope with stress?
“Ako naman, if I don’t work, I just stay home and watch TV or DVDs. O kaya kain at tulog.”
What kind of movies do you watch?
What was the last movie that you saw?
“Last night, I watched A Walk To Remember (starring Mandy Moore). It was the second time that I watched it.”
You’ve been to several cities. Which one is your favorite?
“London. I was there at the height of the Harry Potter craze so feeling ko nasa paligid ko lang si Harry Potter.”
What city to do you want to visit?
“I’ve been to Seattle but I want to go back. Gusto ko kasi ‘yung weather doon, ‘yung palaging maulan.”
When you want to get away from it all, where do you go…what’s your favorite hideaway?
“Naku, sa bahay lang po talaga.”
How is your love life?
“Wala, eh. None, as in none talaga.”
Oh, none? Anong inspiration mo? All work and no play makes Jean a dull girl.
“My friends and my family, so okey lang na walang love life kasi nandyan naman sila, eh. May mga crush-crush, ganyan.”
Who’s your crush?
Your peers have boyfriends na. Don’t you feel that you might be missing something, anything?
“Ganoon? Hindi naman po siguro. There are things that should not be rushed, at kasama na doon ang pagbo-boyfriend.”
Are you choosy?
“Dapat lang po! Hahahaha!”
Can you name three guys who you think know how to take care of their body?
“Piolo Pascual. Gabby Concepcion. Richard Gomez.”
And three women…
“Cherie Gil. Si Ate Juday (Judy Ann Santos). Zsa Zsa Padilla.”
Using only body language, how would you make a guy know that you admire him?
“I just smile at him while straight at his eyes.”

While everyone was hobnobbing and throwing air kisses last Saturday at the ninth annual Philippine Tatler Ball, Bea Tantoco found herself seated at her table vocalizing and making sure her voice was in tip-top shape as she was slated to be the evening’s main performer. With a guest list that included the metro’s most influential last names dressed to the nines, most of them Bea’s family friends, it wasn’t exactly the easiest crowd to perform in front of. When her name was called, Bea glided down the middle of the ballroom hitting every note of Natalie Cole’s classic love song Inseparable before taking it a notch higher by belting out Bette Davis Eyes, which she sang with her “girl crush,” sister Katrina Lobregat. But the evening took an even cooler turn when the petite singer ended her set with her own rendition of Empire State of Mind by Alicia Keys, during which, I think it’s safe to say, the entire ballroom turned into instant fans, myself included. With a powerful, soulful voice — emanating from such a small frame — Bea quickly becomes larger than life when she’s behind the mic. She was able to single-handedly turn the usually mellow mood of the event into something not typically associated with that type of crowd: fun.
Coming from the illustrious Tantoco clan (they own Rustan’s, among other retail giants), it’s surprising to see Bea branch out into terrain unknown. Shifting industries from retail to entertainment can be a daunting one — a challenge Bea is looking forward to conquering. With an album already in the planning stages, will her background serve as a hurdle or a blessing as she pursues her passion for music? It’s time we find out what she’s really made of.
YOUNG STAR: How did you choose the songs for your Philippine Tatler Ball performance?
BEA TANTOCO: It just all fell into place actually between Anton San Diego, my sister Kat and I. We wanted one ballad and jazz standard — Inseparable — and then my most favorite song to sing with my sis is Bette Davis Eyes. Lastly, Empire State of Mind is the most highly requested song.
Do you think coming from an illustrious family is an advantage or a hindrance to your music career?
Because I grew up in a family of retailers, it was not easy for me to choose a career in singing — it came very naturally to me to want to work in the retail industry for my family’s companies. And at the end of the day, I chose to do what I am most passionate about.
If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be and why?
Internationally, I’d like to work with Alicia Keys, John Legend, Jason Mraz, Randy Jackson, David Foster and Burt Bacharach. Locally, I’d like to collaborate with Lea Salonga, Cris Villonco, Kyla, Nina, Jay-R, Gloc-9, Amber Davis — and also Ryan Cayabyab, Louie Ocampo, Rico Blanco, Marcus Davis and Francis Louis Salazar. The reasons for which, I admire all those I have mentioned above for their musical talents and their undying love for music.
Retail royalty: Rather than shop talk, however, Bea Tantoco is singing a different tune.
Who do you follow on Twitter?
I follow Ellen Degeneres — I love her sense of humor!
If you could invite five personalities to a dinner, who would they be?
My late grandmother Gliceria Rustia Tantoco, Ellen Degeneres, Sarah Geronimo, Mariah Carey, and her hubby-dubby Nick Cannon!
Who is your mentor?
I don’t have one mentor. I have many, actually. Whenever I am in a situation wherein I’m stumped, confused or unsure, I will always ask for assistance — whether it be about music, fashion, health, spirituality, or a personal issue.
What is the best advice you’ve received?
“Be compassionate with yourself.” Sometimes I just want to bop myself in the head when I feel I didn’t do things as I would’ve imagined it. Ironically, and at present, this is my mantra.
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you like to live?
Anywhere in Southern Spain, or Italy.
What’s the most valuable gift you have ever received?
The gift of song.
What’s the craziest thing you’ve done?
One of the craziest, most courageous things I have ever done was giving up a stable career in the retail industry, and pursuing a career as a singer in the music industry.
What’s stopping you from going mainstream with your music?
Nothing, actually. I’ve only been performing for no more than five months total. Right now, I’m enjoying “gigging” and am gaining experience into what it takes to be a performer/singer. Soon, I would like to venture into the mainstream.
Who has the sexiest brain for you?
Thich Nhat Hanh.
How would you convince someone to visit the Philippines?
I’d book them a round-trip ticket!
What’s your drink of choice?
Well, right now, it would be a warm and flat San Miguel Light beer. (Laughs)
What song would sum up your current state of mind?
Passionate and soulful.
Who would you gladly trade places with?
Not resting on her family’s laurels: “One of the craziest things I have ever done was giving up a stable career in the retail industry, and pursuing a career as a singer.”
I wouldn’t trade places with anybody. I’m extremely happy. I count my blessings every day. I’ve got wonderful, loving and supportive people in my life. Out of curiosity, though, I would like to see what it’s like to be my cat Cinnamon. He is the most unique cat I know — almost like a dog. You can call him from another room and he’ll come running as fast as a cheetah! He greets everyone ever so cheerfully as they enter my home. He demands to be petted and will rudely sit on guests’ laps.
What word or phrase do you overuse?
The words “awesome” and “amazing.”
What do you look for in friends?
I look for an accepting and sincere heart.
What influences your taste in music?
Many things. As of this moment, the members of my band (The Sauce) that accompany me have been positively and passionately influencing my taste in music.
What cause are you passionate about?
I’m passionate about a lot of things. One is creating a world-class Philippines, one wherein we can bridge the gap between the fortunate and the less fortunate. I am also a closet tree-hugger. I do my part in preserving and conserving what Mother Earth has so generously given to us.
If you only had a weekend to live, what are the last three things you would do?
I would bathe in the Cibeles Fountain in Madrid, then sing at the top of my lungs in the Arena di Verona, and finally come back home to be with my family.
Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?
I have this image in my head of Madison Square Garden and many other international theaters, arenas. But it’s not just me — it’s all the Filipinos in the industry. We will be internationally recognized for our music, art, movies, etc. This is what I imagine when I say a world-class Philippines.
You and your sister, Katrina, are 10 years apart, yet you are very close, how are you different?
Now that I think about it, apart from being born into the same family, my sister and I are very different from each other and we celebrate our differences. That’s what makes us unique individuals — we have a different approach to life and we express complementary ideas and concepts. That’s why we get along so well and can talk for hours on end. We’re also very good at executing. I’ll take care of one part and she the other — and it always comes out so beautifully.
What’s the hardest thing to forgive?
In general, we all make mistakes. For as long as it wasn’t an act that was premeditated or malicious, it is easy to forgive.
How would you describe your personal style?
My personal style is useful, vibrant and colorful — it doesn’t follow any trend as long as it expresses that.
Aside from singing, what other skill do you have that people might be surprised to know?
I speak Spanish conversationally. I also use crystals for spiritual healing. And I am an avid believer in natural and holistic healing of the mind, body and spirit. I am also a life coach and leader in a community called Landmark Education wherein I empower and enable individuals to get what is important to them in their lives and what they care about most.

MASAYA at excited si Sarah Geronimo na makakasama niya for the first time sa isang concert si Martin Nievera.
“True love waits. ‘Yun na lang. ‘Di ba? Ha! Ha! Ha!
Ha! Ha!
So, wala siyang ka-date sa Valentine?
“Kailan po ba ako nagkaroon ng date?? Ha! Ha!
He! He! He! Well, sabi ko nga, kung talagang God will allow it to happen, it will happen.
“Well honestly, more than excited, nate-tense ako. Parang ayaw nila talaga. So, hesitant ako.
Ha! Ha! Ha!”
Paano ‘pag nagkikita-kita silang tatlo nina Kim at Gerald sa ASAP?
“Wala po, no tension at all.

MANILA, Philippines - Five years from now pa bago mag-boyfriend si Sarah Geronimo. Yup, as in limang taon pa.
Yup, old fashion style.
First time na magkakasama sa concert nina Martin at Sarah.
Si Mr. Vic del Rosario ang may idea nito.
Siguradong magiging showdown of talent that will bring together their respective hits in one grand showcase of talent ang What Love Is.
Who will outdo who in this meeting of two giants in the music industry? Who will elicit the loudest shrieks, the greater applause? Who will send more hearts a-flutter just a few days before the season of hearts -- the suave balladeer or the pop princess?
The concert, produced by Viva Concerts, will settle the issue once and for all.
Tickets are available at P4,000 (Patron A), P3,500 (Patron B ), P3,500 (Lower Box), P1,500 (Upper Box A), P1,000 (Upper Box B ) and P400 (General Admission).
What Love Is is the the first time that the Concert King and the Pop Princess will do a concert together, a fresh collaboration from two of the country’s top concert performers.
