"It Takes a Man and a Woman" lead stars John Lloyd Cruz and Sarah Geronimo

MANILA – The romantic-comedy movie "It Takes A Man And A Woman" starring John Lloyd Cruz and Sarah Geronimo has already breached the P200-million mark eight days after it opened in theaters last Black Saturday.

According to Star Cinema’s PR executive Roxy Liquigan, the film has already earned P201 million as of Saturday.

Speaking on the concert variety show “ASAP” on Sunday, Cruz thanked all those who have already seen the movie.

“Thank you very much. Maraming, maraming salamat po talaga. Thank you ‘ASAP’ for giving me the chance na makapagpasalamat sa lahat ng mga nakapanood na. Sa lahat ng mga hindi pa nakakapanood, please po huwag niyo palampasin,” he said.

The third and final installment in the romantic-comedy trilogy fended off strong competition from Hollywood as "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" and "The Host" proved no match to the tandem of Cruz and Geronimo.

The website Box Office Mojo reported that in its first two days on theaters, "It Takes a Man and a Woman" took in P60,975,425, while the "G.I. Joe" sequel, starring Bruce Willis and The Rock, bowed with P48,496,277 to rank No. 2 during the period of March 27-31. "The Host," an alien drama from the author of the "Twilight" saga, managed to earn only P4,205,219.

What made the performance of the Star Cinema movie even more impressive is that it played in fewer theaters (160) compared to "G.I. Joe," which was shown on 221 screens.

In the Cathy Garcia-Molina-directed film, Miggy (Cruz) and Laida (Geronimo) try to co-exist in the same company after breaking up over a character portrayed by actress Isabelle Daza.

Now with more experience and a "fiercer" attitude after spending years in the United States, the returning Laida even challenges Miggy, her former employer, in his business decisions.

The set-up later proves challenging for the former couple to withstand, making it difficult for them to finally come up with a "happy ending."

With the first two movies among the highest grossing local films of all time, "It Takes a Man and a Woman" is expected to replicate the success of "A Very Special Love" and "You Changed My Life."

"A Very Special Love," released in 2008, made P179.3 million, while "You Changed My Life," released in 2009, earned P225.2 million during its theatrical run.
