Not funny enough

SARAH Geronimo’s performance on her weekly musical variety show on TV has generally been improving and gaining in self-assurance. It’s also good to see that she no longer relies excessively on her signature birit style of high-decibel “power” singing, and has learned the virtues of musical versatility and contrast.
However, when Sarah attempts to be funny, it’s another story altogether—she just doesn’t have the knack, wit and timing for it. In this regard, we advise her to stop trying to do everything and just focus on what she does best (singing and dancing).
Two Sundays ago, for instance, she launched into a long, ostensibly satirical scene with some top comedians—and ended up with egg, or at least custard, on her pretty face.
The extended spoof was a takeoff on the current “monster” film hit, “The Mistress,” and Sarah was cast as the wife, Mitch Valdes as the mistress, Nanette Inventor as the wife’s intrigera friend, Tessie Tomas as a Miriam-type lawyer-judge, Gab Valenciano as the husband, and Luis Manzano as the lover.
In the first place, Sarah was thoroughly miscast as the wife, since she was the youngest player in the scene, so the spoof simply didn’t wash.
It also looked and felt terribly under-rehearsed, with some players flubbing their lines, falling out of character, giggling inanely etc.
In addition, the young Valenciano was also miscast as the husband. Aside from that, he was an inexperienced comedic performer, so his portrayal fell flat. Luis was similarly phlegmatic.
Mitch and the skit’s other cast members were far more experienced and did better, but the dialogue they were made to deliver was generally lacking in wit, so they had their work cut out to imbue them with comic zing and sting.
To make things worse, Nanette mugged too much in a forcing-through effort to punch up the scene’s level of hilarity.
Well, the veteran comics will survive to tickle viewers’ collective funny bone another day—but, Sarah was so awkward and ineffectual as a comedian that she should really give that challenging performance mode a wide berth—until she really learns how to do it well.
The “don’t mind me, I’m just fooling around” alibi simply won’t cut it, especially when you’re performing with experienced comedians whose more with-it work can leave your relatively gauche attempts far, far behind.
It’s fine to aspire to become a total performer, but “total” means good at a wide range of performing modes—and, when you clearly aren’t, the attempt can be counterproductive, to say the least.
Now that Sarah is a young-adult performer, it behooves her to set higher standards for herself, because her “learning” days and years are over, and she’s now expected to do well in everything she does. If, as in the case of comedy, she falls short of the mark, she should leave well enough alone and focus instead on her best performing suits, for which she’s more deservedly acclaimed.

He does not see it. Close-minded writer or just a writer born to criticize SARAH G. but no matter what he do THE POPSTAR PRINCESS will always be on top.
agree na agree ako sayo girl...
GV as in GV...
i'd have to agree about the Mistress skit though...it was really kinda.... lame. BUT, a running show will tend to have a few misses every now and then. it was wrong of him to generalize based on just what he saw last sunday. "she just doesn’t have the knack, wit and timing for it" --umm, Sarah currently has 4 successful rom-coms under her belt. i believe that knack, wit, and timing are prerequisites for it.
hoping to read something genuinely positive about Sarah in his column some time. but i wouldn't really bet on it. [img]https://sarahgeronimo.com/uploads/ipb/style_emoticons/legacy/biggrin.png ][/img]

With all due respect to Sir Nestor U. Torre of Philippine Daily Inquirer, I can’t agree in any of his statements in his latest article about Sarah Geronimo.
NOT FUNNY ENOUGH
By Nestor U. Torre September 28, 2012
“SARAH Geronimo’s performance on her weekly musical variety show on TV has generally been improving and gaining in self-assurance. It’s also good to see that she no longer relies excessively on her signature birit style of high-decibel “power” singing, and has learned the virtues of musical versatility and contrast.”
Let’s start here. At first look, one might think that he’s trying to give compliments here but he’s not. He said “..performance has been generally improving…”, is acceptable but the “not relies on birit” and “virtues of musical versatility” are something that Sarah Geronimo has learned long before she started her own show, she has proven that in her production numbers in ASAP so this part of the trying-to-be-nice opening paragraph is uncalled for.
“However, when Sarah attempts to be funny, it’s another story altogether—she just doesn’t have the knack, wit and timing for it. In this regard, we advise her to stop trying to do everything and just focus on what she does best (singing and dancing).”
Knack, wit, timing. Seriously, Sir Writer? Are you new in the business? How can she lack those three when she hold the title of the highest grossing romantic-COMEDY movie of all time here in the Philippines and other two romcom movies in the top 15 movies? How old are you sir? If you’re only 3 then you must’ve not heard about her movies yet. And just who are you SIR to advise her to stop to do everything when she absolutely can? She doesn’t just sing and dance, she performs! She also does well as a host, and in contrary to what you’re trying to say, as a comedienne!
“Two Sundays ago, for instance, she launched into a long, ostensibly satirical scene with some top comedians—and ended up with egg, or at least custard, on her pretty face.”
Oh. For instance, huh? That was just one time when they were not that prepared. Did those “top comedians” do well? They all are good but they all just did not do well on that certain skit because, most probably, they lacked preparations. I think it was just rehearsed Saturday because SG just came back from the United States Friday that week. She still had to rehearse for her opening, smash up and statement song. If you think you can create an effective skit in a matter of hours, then you are the one, SIR! And she was not the only one who failed in that skit but all of them? Why are you trying to blame it all to Sarah and give an unsolicited, irrelevant advise that she stops doing it? Overall, it was fine and was pulled through.
“The extended spoof was a takeoff on the current “monster” film hit, “The Mistress,” and Sarah was cast as the wife, Mitch Valdes as the mistress, Nanette Inventor as the wife’s intrigera friend, Tessie Tomas as a Miriam-type lawyer-judge, Gab Valenciano as the husband, and Luis Manzano as the lover.”
“Sarah was cast as the wife”. This line here certainly needs some reconstruction. A professional writer shouldn’t publish something with any grammatical error. Articles should be double- and triple-checked especially when you’re writing for a well-known newspaper. And what do “birit” and “intrigera” have to do with an all-English article from a long-time writer like you sir? Ran out of words? [img]https://sarahgeronimo.com/uploads/ipb/style_emoticons/legacy/tongue.png ][/img]“In the first place, Sarah was thoroughly miscast as the wife, since she was the youngest player in the scene, so the spoof simply didn’t wash.
It also looked and felt terribly under-rehearsed, with some players flubbing their lines, falling out of character, giggling inanely etc.
In addition, the young Valenciano was also miscast as the husband. Aside from that, he was an inexperienced comedic performer, so his portrayal fell flat. Luis was similarly phlegmatic.”
Wow! What do you know about “proper” casting sir? And age doesn’t have anything to do with the role, after all it’s a spoof! A comedy skit! Everything doesn’t have to be how YOU think they should be, SIR. So, you noticed that it was unrehearsed well; why are you complaining then? It was not rehearsed well not because of their lack of skills and courage to do so but because of some time constraints!
“Mitch and the skit’s other cast members were far more experienced and did better, but the dialogue they were made to deliver was generally lacking in wit, so they had their work cut out to imbue them with comic zing and sting.
To make things worse, Nanette mugged too much in a forcing-through effort to punch up the scene’s level of hilarity.”
Now, you’re trying to question the script-writers and in one way or another the director. And if you think that the script was generally lacking in wit, why are you blaming Sarah for the failure of the skit? Did she write them herself? You can do better than this, can’t you SIR?
“Well, the veteran comics will survive to tickle viewers’ collective funny bone another day—but, Sarah was so awkward and ineffectual as a comedian that she should really give that challenging performance mode a wide berth—until she really learns how to do it well.”
Now, you’re back to Sarah. Awkward and ineffective? Even the other people in the skit that you referred to as “veteran comics” looked awkward and ineffective, so how can your standards for Sarah be so high that you keep going back to blaming it all to her? In fact, she should be the most forgivable of all, because she’s the youngest and she’s got so much time to learn unlike those “veterans” who also failed in that skit. And you’re contradicting yourself again, at the start of your article, SIR, you said she should stop but how can she “learn how to do it well” if she stops? Should she practice mentally? Where’s consistency, SIR?
“The “don’t mind me, I’m just fooling around” alibi simply won’t cut it, especially when you’re performing with experienced comedians whose more with-it work can leave your relatively gauche attempts far, far behind.”
Same argument, if those ‘experienced comedians’ failed, can’t Sarah? You are not making sense at all, SIR. You’re talking about how the skit has failed to serve its value but you keep going back to blaming it all to Sarah when in fact all of them failed. More to be blamed are those ‘veterans’ because they are least expected to fail but they failed just like Sarah.
“It’s fine to aspire to become a total performer, but “total” means good at a wide range of performing modes—and, when you clearly aren’t, the attempt can be counterproductive, to say the least.”
SG can’t aspire to be a total performer because she already is. Yes, she’s good at a wide range of performing modes and if you are rational enough, a single skit should never be considered as the sole basis of how she is as a total performer! She did well in all other skits that they had in the show, I know you saw her other performances, SIR! So, what’s one fail compared to many successes?
“Now that Sarah is a young-adult performer, it behooves her to set higher standards for herself, because her “learning” days and years are over, and she’s now expected to do well in everything she does. If, as in the case of comedy, she falls short of the mark, she should leave well enough alone and focus instead on her best performing suits, for which she’s more deservedly acclaimed.”
SIR, “learning” days and years never get over! If you stop learning, you will never improve. Like this one; you need to learn how to write better articles that make sense, SIR. And yes, she is doing not just well but great in everything that she does and she can’t fall short of the mark as a comedienne because again, she’s got blockbuster romantic-COMEDY movies! And her directors in her movies just have a lot of good words to say about her knack, wit and timing in comedy. You should try to talk to SG’s directors Ms. Cathy Garcia-Molina, Ms. Mae Czarina Cruz and Sir Raz dela Torre so you’ll get some enlightenment about this.

This article is obviously out of bitterness and insecurity. You’re trying to put a good lady down when she’s not done anything to you. I’d bet SG doesn’t even know you. I’m not saying that she knows me, but at least, I don’t write defamatory articles to put other artists down. I just write out of love, and I’m always ready to destroy something that tries to destroy Sarah Geronimo. You can do better, SIR. Why don’t you just write good articles about your favorite stars?
Sir Nestor U. Torre, you are so NOT FUNNY ENOUGH.
