"It Takes a Man and a Woman" is the best of the Laida Magtalas- Miggy Montenegro love story

So Laida Magtalas is now based in New York City, sporting a new hairdo, and trying on less colorful, more fashionable outfits. While Miggy Montenegro continues to struggle in gaining success for his family's business. From being the Cinderella to her stubborn but dashing prince charming, Laida becomes a superwoman.

That could be a stellar movement of a romantic comedy's plot which most of us welcomed with a "power hug". Our soap operas are plagued with overly complicated melodramas that even if it was a challenge to create three movies maintaining the same lightweight and feel-good aura, the third installment was successful in coming up with new twists, in preserving the charm of its characters, and in showing flawless story continuity.

"A Very Special Love" and "You Changed My Life" delivered a smooth exhibit of laughs and 'kiligs' but I should say "It Takes a Man and a Woman" is the best of the three. Sarah Geronimo exuded a neat portrayal of Laida's evolution while John Lloyd Cruz performed what was expected of him: to continue being adorable. Sarah's hairdo might appear too much for the stylish but for a regular audience who related to her and loved her, the short hair is a plus in Laida's bubbly character.

After this movie, Sarah Geronimo can strongly claim that even if we put box office gross aside, she has successfully crossed over to acting from singing. In fact, I can say she came out as the best performer in this movie despite John Lloyd's usual fine performance. Sarah's shining moment was the elevator scene when she related Laida choosing Miggy over her work and Mother. John Lloyd's defining moment, on the other hand, was that flashback when Miggy was asking Laida to not break up with him. Both came up with an impeccable teamwork in the wedding scene.

The supporting cast are too far to be ignored too. Joross Gamboa and Matet de Leon, most especially, pulled more than half of the comedic parts in the movie while Isabelle Daza exceeded expectations. The punchlines highlighted further the movie's excellent writing and Joross and Matet did not waste those chances of hilarity. Isabelle, meanwhile, made up a classy new girlfriend character: not too strong but not too weak either. Her breakdown scene when Miggy confessed he has still feelings for Laida came out pleasantly. She could just be the only actress among the "It" girls.

Overall, the movie is a must-see. Direk Cathy Garcia-Molina aced it again.

If "It Takes a Man and a Woman" overtakes "Sisterakas" in the all-time local box office gross, the better. At least then, our pop history books can reveal that the most watched Filipino movie may not be exactly Oscar-worthy but it is a premium when it comes to entertainment value.

Footnote: Abs-cbn.com reported that "It Take a Man and a Woman" grossed PhP32.6 million on its opening day last Black Saturday, March 30 and took another PhP32.4 million on Easter Sunday for a 2-day total gross of PhP65 million. The movie is showing in more than 100 cinemas nationwide
